Marseille is greener than many visitors expect. City parks offer shaded lawns, play areas, pétanque pitches and sea views, while the hills and coastal sites give more natural walks. Some are central, others reached by bus or tram, so check the map before you set out.

In summer, forest areas may have restricted access during high fire risk, so check the daily notices at the park entrance or from local authorities. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes for hillside paths.

  • Look at opening hours, as some gardens close at dusk.
  • Check rules on dogs, barbecues and bikes.
  • For picnics, find parks with benches and tables.
